With an average altitude in excess of 3500m, Tibet can truly be described as the Roof of the World. Lying to the north of the great Himalayan Range which separates it from its neighbours India, Nepal, Bhutan and Burma, much of the country is high-altitude desert, with pockets of incredible ecological diversity. Tibet offers awe-inspiring scenery, with turquoise lakes, wide valleys and high alpine desert, all set against the backdrop of the snow capped Himalayas.
Despite recent cultural upheavals, including the cultural revolution, Tibet's grandeur, mystery and magic remain undiminished. The Potala Palace, Kumbum, Lake Manasarovar, Mt. Kailash and, of course, Mt Everest, are still the stuff of the traveller’s dreams. One can still see nomads herding their yaks, pilgrims worshipping at sacred shrines and the expansive, striking and enduring Himalayan scenery. With its spectacular mountain scenery and rich Buddhist culture, no place on earth has captured explorers’ and travellers’ imagination quite like Tibet.
